Red Devils Take Beltran Look

US youth international Tony Beltran is faring well on trial with esteemed second Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern, but a successful showing may not necessarily lead to a fast contract offer.

The UCLA handyman becomes the latest in a string of US U-20 World Cup standouts to get a shot in Europe, with Freddy Adu and Sal Zizzo already having earned deals with Benfica and Hannover 96, respectively.

"If we test a player, it does not have mean that that we must get him immediately," FCK manager Kjetil Rekdal told regional daily Die Rheinpfalz. "That can also happen in the winter break or before the next season."

"He made all the plays at World Cup," added Red Devils sport director Michael Schjønberg. "Beltran is a college soccer player, and therefore can be acquired for less money."

Beltran, who usually works from midfield for the Bruins, too part in all five US matches at the U-20 World Cup in Canada as a right back, recording one assist.

The 19-year old Westwood junior is the second American collegiate ace checked out by Kaiserslautern in the past year; over the winter, University of North Carolina star Michael Harrington rejected an FCK II offer before joining the Kansas City Wizards.
