Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribéry lashed home a disputed spot kick as the shootout loomed, eliminating city rivals 1860 in a DfB Pokal quarterfinal derby on Wednesday night.

Gregg Berhalter worked the full 120 minutes, while fellow American Josh Wolff watched the proceedings from the bench.

The Lions, already going without top scorers Antonio di Salvo and Berkant Göktan, lost starting keeper Michael Hoffman to a 30th minute collision with Luca Toni.

Toni appeared to score on either side of intermission, but each was flagged - for a foul before the break and for an offside violation after.

Bayern were gaining strength by the minute, and stand-in 1860 netminder Phillip Tschauner had be on his toes to smother a Mark van Bommel drive.

After the underdogs saw Oliver Kahn deny Lars Bender near the hour mark, they suffered more bad luck when key attacker Daniel Bierofka had to be replaced due to an ankle injury.

Mustafa Kučuković should have done better with a free header, but 1860 were handed a break when Toni got the gate for his second booking in the 84th minute.

FC Hollywood star Lucio then had a penalty claim rejected just before the ref blew his whistle to end regulation play scoreless.

The first extra session saw Timo Gebhardt go close at one end before Miroslav Klose did likewise at the other.

Benni Schwarz received his second yellow and walking papers - largely due to the acting skills of Ribéry - during the second 15-minute overtime period. Lucio then skimmed the crossbar with a header, and Tschauner made good stops on Zé Roberto and Philipp Lahm.

With the match all but set to move to penalties, whistleblower Peter Gagelmann rewarded Bayern with a last gasp spot kick after Chhunly Pagenburg seemed to trip up Ribéry outside the area. The France ace deposited a first try that was waved off by the overzealous referee, then converted with a cheeky dink down the center on the second to win the day.

Seventh place 1860 return to 2.Bundesliga action with a Sunday visit from Alemannia Aachen.
