Real Salt Lake have confirmed that a $2 million Benfica tranfer for Freddy Adu has all but been completed. The teen pheom will fly to Portugal Sunday to put pen to paper on a five-year deal.

"Nothing has been signed, so I guess there's a .0001 percent chance that he could return," RSL press officer Trey Fitzgerald told the Salt Lake Tribune. "But I wouldn't expect it to happen."

The Lisbon-based powerhouse had previously been in advanced discussions with Adu, though it seemed as if all hope of a breakthrough had collapsed due to incompatible personal demands. He will now sign a contract worth over half a million dollars a season, plus bonuses.

The Ghana-born American Under-20 standout scored from the penalty spot in last Tuesday's friendly match against Argentine club Boca Juniors - his last MLS hurrah, at least for now.

The transfer could have a domino effect, with former Nigeria ace JayJay Okocha potentially waiting in the wings as replacement playmaker. His agent, Christian Bönig, informed ASD on Friday that talks with RSL had been in a holding pattern all week.

In joining Benfica, Adu may be in the position of competing for time with fellow 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup star Angel Di Maria, recently captured by the Eagles. The American landed on the Golden Ball short list, while the Argentina youngster was key to their title run.
