AaB Blow Lead at Spurs

LONDON, ENGLAND - Aalborg blew a two-goal lead as Tottenham fought back to win 3-2 in their UEFA Cup Group G clash at White Hart Lane.

Danny Califf's team had a dream start when Thomas Enevoldsen found the Tottenham net within two minutes and Kasper Risgård added a second eight minutes before the break to send Aalborg into the locker room 2-0 ahead. But then following two changes made at halftime, Spurs pulled off a stunning comeback.

Dimitar Berbatov had the ball in the net within 39 seconds of the restart, before Steed Malbranque and Darren Bent added goals in a second half that belonged to the home team, who in the end ran out worthy winners.

"It really was a game of two halves," Aalborg captain Califf told American Soccer Daily. "We came out real strong and dominated the first half and took them out of the game."

"Then they made some good substitutions, threw a lot at us and happened to nick one in the first few minutes like we did and there you go - the game turned on its head."

Backed by a vocal traveling support, AaB scored in less than two minutes from kickoff to shock the White Hart Lane faithful, who had barely had time to take their seats.

Denmark Under-21 midfielder Enevoldsen ran on to a throw-in from the right and let rip unexpectedly just over 20 yards from goal, his missile whistling past Paul Robinson to billow the Spurs net.

Tottenham were shell-shocked and struggled to react. Their passes were hurried and went astray too often as Aalborg soaked up their increasingly desperate thrusts and moved the ball around with some composure.

Robbie Keane was clean through in the 16th minute from a one-two with Berbatov, but a questionable linesman's flag put a stop to his infiltration.

An equally curious call saw Aalborg denied a penalty in the 23rd minute when Lee Young-Pyo brought down Rade Prica in the area, but AaB got their consolation when they eased into a two-nothing lead eight minutes before the break.

A minute after captain Califf had nodded over the bar from a Martin Pedersen corner kick, Andreas Johansson spread the play wide on the left to Prica. The Swedish striker whipped in a dangerous cross which left goalkeeper Paul Robinson in no man's land and allowed Risgård to bundle it over the line.

Aalborg were good value for their double advantage, having looked dangerous in attack and comfortable in possession. The most goalie Karim Zaza had been troubled was when Jermaine Jenas arrived on him in the 41st minute and left his cleats in the 32-year old keeper's stomach.

Spurs coach Juande Ramos was the hero of the night, bringing on Tom Huddlestone and Darren Bent at halftime; switches that proved to be tactical masterstrokes, and changing formation to a 3-5-2.

Huddlestone at once took up a midfield anchor role and provided the assist for the move a minute after the whistle which brought Spurs back into the game. Berbatov sprinted on to his finely-threaded pass through the middle to toe-poke the ball past the advancing Zaza and breathe new life into Tottenham.

Huddlestone was again instrumental five minutes later, beginning a multi-man move which ended with the raiding Malbranque coming in from the left, picking his spot and firing past Zaza into the top corner to level the scores.

By the hour mark, it was clear which way the game was headed. Spurs had come out the blocks at halftime on fire, and for 15 minutes, had Aalborg on the ropes.

Huddlestone was imperious pulling the strings in the center, while Aaron Lennon had the freedom of the right flank to perform his best Roadrunner impression as he waltzed past defender after defender.

Aalborg were over-awed by the Londoners' response and managed no forays upfield until the 64th minute when a Prica flick let Enevoldsen try his luck from distance again. This time, the goal scorer’s effort flew just wide of Robinson's upright.

Two minutes later, Spurs really drove the knife into their visitors by scoring for a third time in 20 minutes. Gareth Bale's set piece from the right was thumped towards goal, but took a deflection off Enevoldsen, wrong-footing Zaza, who could only parry it as far as Lennon.

The England winger then hit a textbook grass cutter whizzing to the far side of the six-yard box, where Bent was on hand to side-foot into an unguarded net.

As if inspired by watching Beowulf, the English had been badly wounded, only to knock the stuffing out of the Danes, who came no closer to replying than a Prica header high and wide with eight minutes to go.

Indeed, Spurs might have added some more in the closing moments. Califf made a telling intervention to stop Bent pulling the trigger in the 86th, but two minutes later, Bent lost his American stalker to square for Kevin Prince-Boateng, whose drive Zaza barely fumbled away to safety.

In injury time, Zaza made a flying save from a Lennon strike and Malbranque somehow contrived to miss the target having rounded the keeper, but the night belonged to Tottenham.

"I don't think we were too relaxed," said Califf. "We knew they were going to come at us a lot early in the second half. One of their goals, I thought there was a foul, but they just came at us with a lot more than we could cope with. We had to chase the game and that's not the sort of team you want to be doing that against."

"That was not an easy place to play, but I think the fact that we had the confidence to bring our game and not be intimidated by White Hart Lane is something we can bring to our Danish games as well. It was a tremendous opportunity to play a team of this caliber, a storied club, and I think we can be proud of the way we came out and played tonight."

AaB are now at the foot of Group G with one point from two outings, with the top three teams in the group of five gaining passage to the next round. The Danes' third UEFA Cup test out of four is at home to Getafe on December 6th.

"Getafe is a very good team," explained Califf, "But we are at home, so I think we can take something from that match. Then in our last match, we have Hapoel Tel-Aviv (on December 19th), which is an eminently winnable game, so I think we still have a half-decent chance of moving on."
