MLSU Power Rankings

by MLS Underground - October 9, 2007

The top four hold their places in Week 28, while New York are the biggest droppers. The Galaxy continues to be the big climbers, but they have company with Chicago and FC Dallas on the rise.

Week 28

#1 DC United (Unchanged) - A tough week for the league's best club as it lost a heartbreaker in Guadalajara to be knocked out of Copa Sudamericana. On only three days rest, United had to travel to Arrowhead to face the Wizards. DC managed a draw against the Wizards who are fighting for a playoff spot. Even with a week not up to DC's usual capabilities, they remain top dog in MLS.

#2 Chivas USA (Unchanged) - The Goats continue to push hard towards the playoffs and appear poised to win their first ever regular season conference title. John Cunliffe's two goals in the road victory over Real Salt Lake gives Preki a solid attacking option off the bench.

#3 New England Revolution (Unchanged) - The Revolution stumble with a 2-1 loss at Chicago. The Revs are the clear #3 in MLS, but look to be a notch below the quality of DC and Chivas USA.

#4 Houston Dynamo (Unchanged) - Houston dropped a home game to the red-hot Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1. The biggest story out of Houston though is the suspension of star midfielder Ricardo Clark who will miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs. His loss is devastating to the Dynamo's opportunity to repeat as MLS Cup champions.

#5 Chicago Fire (+1) - The Fire earned a huge victory over the weekend knocking off #3 New England. The Fire currently sit in eighth place, just one point behind struggling Kansas City. The Fire have their biggest game of the season this weekend when they travel to RFK Stadium to face DC United.

#6 FC Dallas (+2) - A couple late goals by the Hoops has Dallas moving in the right direction moving towards the playoffs. More surprising was Steve Morrow's decision not to include Denílson on the US Open Cup Final roster. It looks as if the DP signing will be a bust.

#7 Los Angeles Galaxy (+3) - The Galaxy may be the hottest team in MLS after a stunning 2-1 victory in Houston. The Galaxy have a very winnable game at home against #13 Toronto and then would face struggling New York. On the last day of the season, the Galaxy face the Chicago Fire in what could be a win and in game.

#8 New York Red Bulls (-3) -  Despite a disappointing loss to Toronto, the Red Bulls managed to earn a playoff spot thanks to Columbus' loss to FC Dallas. New York can clinch third place in the East with a victory over Kansas City. The Red Bulls will have to do that without Joe Vide, who was red carded in the loss to Toronto.

#9 Kansas City Wizards (-2) - The Wizards season is on the brink after a tie to DC United. With both the Chicago Fire and the Los Angeles Galaxy surging, the Wizards need a victory to get into the playoffs. Perhaps, there best chance at a win is on Saturday at struggling New York.

#10 Colorado Rapids
(+1) - The Rapids kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a victory over Toronto. Even if Colorado makes the playoffs, expect several changes during the offseason.

#11 Columbus Crew (-2) - The Crew suffered another late collapse as they fell to Dallas on Saturday all but assuring another November on the golf course. On a positive note, Eddie Gaven is playing well for the Crew again after a disappointing 2006 and early 2007.

#12 Real Salt Lake (Unchanged) - RSL fell to in-form Chivas USA 3-2. Robbie Findley scored his team leading seventh goal in the loss. With the solid rookie seasons of Maurice Edu and Dane Richards, perhaps Findley is the one rookie that has really gone under the radar.

#13 Toronto FC (Unchanged) - For the first time since July 4th, Toronto FC was victorious after defeating New York 2-1 on Thursday night. The combination of Maurice Edu and Marvell Wynne gave New York fits all game long. The 2006 and 2007 #1 draft picks should be a force for the next few years unless a transfer to Europe ends the on field partnership.
