With so much going on in US Soccer right now between the Under-20 tournament and Copa America, it's hard to keep a serious focus on MLS - throw in a vacation to New Hampshire into the mix and things get a lot tougher. |

| My second "state of the soccer nation" observation came on Sunday at, of all places, my first NASCAR event. I could write an entire column on the experience, but I'll leave that for another time. The thing that struck me as relevant for this column was that I saw no fewer than four soccer jerseys in the crowd. Ordinarily, I wouldn't be particularly happy to see a Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo - but in this crowd, which by all reports should be as anti-soccer as it gets, I was heartened to see it. When I saw a USMNT jersey not long after, I was thrilled. By the time I saw Celtic and England shirts around the crowd, I was convinced that things must be looking good for the sport. By the way, if you haven't been to a NASCAR event, you should try it once - it didn't convince me to change my weekend viewing habits any but as a live, in-person event, it was a blast - even more so if you make some time to join the tailgating insanity beforehand. OK, on to This Week in MLS... Despite the scoreline, I remain unconvinced by DC United's run of good form. The match against the Red Bulls nearly a month ago was something impressive to behold, but since then they haven't done too much that leads me to believe that they're really worthy to be among the Eastern Conference leaders. That said, after watching the Revs late night on Saturday night against Chivas USA and seeing that Kansas City couldn't handle Toronto FC on their home turf - maybe it's just that the Eastern Conference isn't as good as they showed early in the season. I suppose I should give the Revs a pass with their two best central midfielders - Larentowicz and Joseph - out but having invested two hours of my vacation in watching this match, I was hoping for more from a team that has become known for its ability to bring young players into the side to fill in gaps when needed. Giving up the second goal after the Goats went down a man was particularly disappointing... For those of you who shape your fantasy rosters based on who you believe will win in any given week, just start adding Maykel Galindo to your team for every Chivas USA home match - they just don't lose there. I avoided them because they were going to be without Guzan, Bornstein and Kljestan, but unlike New England, they overcame their absences and got both the win and the clean sheet. Now if only they could play all their playoff matches at home... Off the field comes news that the once-promising Santino Quaranta was traded from the Galaxy to the Red Bulls. For me, Quaranta is one of the most frustrating and divisive figures in MLS history. Clearly, there is plenty of talent there. For those of you who can't remember his last scintillating play on the field (it has been a while) all you should need as evidence is the fact that teams keep trading for him despite the lack of quality that he's shown in recent years. Injuries were always sited as the primary culprit for Santino's inability to nail down a starting spot while he was at DC United, but having been given a new lease on life out west, he's shown that maybe there was more to it than that. Still, Bruce Arena gave him some time with the National Team last year in the run-up to Germany, so maybe he's the man to work magic on MLS's ultimate reclamation project... Looking ahead to the rest of this holiday week, I hope you all have your TiVo's ready to go because this week will feature about as much soccer as you have time for. MLS will feature a full schedule for the 4th and then again as usual over the weekend. With both the senior and Under-20 teams playing twice as well, your best hope is that your significant other is traveling out of town for the weekend. |
