SuperDraft Report Card

by Jason Endres - January 22, 2008

The 2008 MLS SuperDraft was the year of the defender. With half of the selections in the opening round for defenders, teams across Major League Soccer got an injection of backline quality. With the draft now complete, let's take a look at how well each team selected on Friday.

Chicago Fire - The Fire continue to show why they have a great collection of young talent with a deep and diversified draft day. The Fire picked up the best forward (Patrick Nyarko), a goalkeeper who received a lot of buzz (Dominic Cervi), the combine's best player (Peter Lowry) and a Generation Adidas midfielder late in the third round (Stephen King). Grade: A

Chivas USA - The Goats had only one selection in the MLS SuperDraft taking Keith Savage in the fourth round. Chivas gave up their top two picks for Paulo Nagamura and Alex Zotinca, which give them the worst draft of any club in the league. Grade: F

Colorado Rapids
- The Rapids had only one high level pick, and with that selection, took distributing midfielder Ciaran O'Brien out of UC Santa Barbara. O'Brien had a difficult combine and many projected him to drop lower in the draft. The Rapids may have gotten the steal of the draft when they selected midfielder Scott Campbell late in the fourth round.  Grade: C

Columbus Crew - The Crew were extremely happy to see big defender Andy Iro drop into their laps at #6. The Crew followed that up with selecting two of the top forwards in the draft in George Josten and Ricardo Pierre-Louis. A solid draft for the Crew as they addressed their biggest needs. Grade: B+

DC United - The Supporters Shield winners only had one selection in the first two rounds. With that pick, United took touted midfielder Andrew Jacobson. Later in the day, they selected sleeper pick Ryan Cordeiro. Grade: B

FC Dallas - Another great draft by head coach Steve Morrow. With three selections in the first two rounds, the Hoops acquired a wealth of young talent including the best young keeper in the draft (Josh Lambo), a creative midfielder (Eric Avila) and the player whose stock rose the most at the MLS combine (Brek Shea). Will any of these contribute at the start of the season? Maybe Avila. However, each of these players is Generation Adidas and therefore the salary will be exempt from the cap. Grade: A

Houston Dynamo
- The two-time defending MLS Cup champions had no picks until late in the third round. With the depth of Houston's rosters, it will be difficult for any of their selections to make the field next season. However, they traded their top two picks for Nate Jaqua and Richard Mulrooney - with those two guys playing a key part, Houston won their second consecutive title. Grade: B

Kansas City Wizards
- The Wizards are in the midst of complete change in their franchise. The dealt Jose Burciaga and Nick Garcia prior to the draft, and will likely lose Eddie Johnson to English Premiership club Fulham. However, Curt Onalfo had a solid draft. With the top selection, they took Chance Myers, who could replace Burciaga. The Wizards continued the defensive trend with the selections of Jonathan Leathers and Yomby William. The intriguing pick is Roger Espinoza out of Ohio State - if he develops into a solid pro, this could be a great draft. Grade: B+

Los Angeles Galaxy
- Alexi Lalas had several picks at his disposal on draft day, but eventually traded most away for allocation money and future considerations. With their top selection, Los Angeles picked up a solid outside back in Sean Franklin. The Galaxy may have gotten a steal at #29 with US Under-20 World Cup defender Julian Valentin. Grade: C+

New England Revolution
- As has become tradition, New England had another set of solid selections. With their top two selections, New England took Generation Adidas defender Rob Valentino and then perhaps the most MLS ready midfielder in Michael Videira. However, it looks like Videira might test the European waters. The Revs also added Videira's college teammates Joe Germanese and Spencer Wadsworth. Grade: B

New York Red Bulls - The Red Bulls lost their first round pick for compensation for Juan Carlos Osorio. With their top pick, the Red Bulls selected a player to fill a hole in the defense. The Red Bulls also got underrated midfielder David Roth in the fourth round. Grade: B-

Real Salt Lake - A surprise selection at #3, RSL chose Tony Beltran, who many believed could drop to the second round of the SuperDraft. With their two other picks in the first two rounds, RSL selected underrated defender David Horst and young prospect Alex Nimo. The U-17 international has the potential to be something special, but is a project that is a couple years away from being MLS ready. Grade: B

San Jose Earthquakes
- A very modest draft for the Earthquakes. The Quakes made their biggest move prior to draft day by sending the top pick to Kansas City for Nick Garcia. Their only selection, Shea Salinas, will provide some midfield depth. Grade: C

Toronto FC - Toronto's overall draft grade cannot be truly be determined at this point. If Joseph Lapira elects to play for Toronto, TFC would be the draft day winners. In addition to Lapira, Toronto selected the best defender in the draft pool (Julius James), a versatile defender who can also play in the midfield (Pat Phelan) and depth in goal (Brian Edwards). Grade: without Lapira, A-; with Lapira, A+
