ASD's 2007 All-Euro Team

by ASD - December 31, 2007

With the calendar ready to flip to a new year, it's time to name our first All-Euro team.

Unlike our MLS edition, this eleven comes with an interesting caveat. All first team players overseas have been judged on a level playing field, with league quality factored out of the equation. This way, the likes of Charles Kazlauskas and Frank Simek can compete fairly for recognition with Steve Cherundolo... and they did.

The right and left back slots proved to be the tightest contests, with central defense not far behind. Though we only had two unanimous selections in Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey, most positions featured runaway winners.

If you have any questions, comments, congrats or complaints, let us have 'em at contact@americansoccerdaily.com.

GK Tim Howard - Everton

Timmy secured a permanent move to Goodison Park in February, finishing with 21 wins and 14 clean sheets for the calendar year 2007. A fixture in goal for the Toffees, Howard also backstopped the Mersey side through a perfect UEFA Cup group stage campaign, allowing only one goal in three starts.

▪ Danny Califf: Captain Amerika
▪ Freddy Adu: Making a Difference

Honorable mention - Brad Friedel (Blackburn), Adin Brown (Aalesund FK)

DF Steve Cherundolo - Hannover 96
Cherundolo ignored interest from Bolton and Schalke to continue helping the Reds in their consistent climb up the Bundesliga hierarchy. The former Portland Pilot started 2007 searching for form, but quickly returned to being one of Germany’s most reliable right backs.

DF Jay DeMerit - Watford
Ever the prototypical tough-as-nails center back, DeMerit started the year by hitting a Premiership winner against Brad Friedel and Blackburn. All in all, he worked 37 contests between two divisions, a fair share of them with the captain's armband. What's more, Hornets boss Aidy Boothroyd shuddered at the thought of losing him to an EPL raider this summer.

DF Carlos Bocanegra - Fulham
Last winter, he was showing everyone he could actually fill in admirably in central midfield, but eventually returned to defense to provide the Cottagers with their most reliable center back. Often the captain in Brian McBride's absence, Bocanegra even found time to score four goals in 2007, putting him among the Premiership's most threatening set piece targets.

DF Heath Pearce - Hansa Rostock
The Hansa Rostock summer recruit edged out the tightest positional vote on our team. Some may question Pearce's place here due to a spotty Bundesliga appearance record, but don't forget he was a key backline member and top assist maker for FC Nordsjælland during the first half of 2007.

Honorable mentions - Frank Simek (Sheffield Wednesday), Danny Califf (Aalborg), Oguchi Onyewu (Standard Liège), Gregg Berhalter (1860 Munich), Tighe Dombrowski (IK Sirius), Charles Kazlauskas (TOP Oss), Ramiro Corrales (Brann)

MF Michael Bradley - Heerenveen
One of only two unanimous choices on this list, Bradley started the year as semi-regular at the Abe Lenstra and finished it as one of only two Heerenveen men to start every game this season. Busy becoming a bonafide box-to-box workhorse, the US starlet has turned heads by scoring 10 goals since August - including six Eredivisie strikes, the third-highest total for a midfielder in the league.

MF Clint Dempsey - Fulham

Our other unanimous choice, Deuce's 2007 may have started slow, but he capped last season by banking the most financially important goal in club history against Liverpool to stave off relegation. This term, despite playing out of position, he leads the team with six league strikes.

MF Freddy Adu - Benfica
The USMNT prodigy has wasted little time becoming the guy fans scream bloody murder for when the offense is struggling, thanks to four late substitute strikes. He hasn't won a starting role yet, but has definitely shown that he belongs in the world of big time European football - sometimes in scant minutes.

MF DaMarcus Beasley - Rangers

After a 2006 filled with injury and uncertainty, Da Bease returned to form this year. He spent the first half on loan at Man City, providing some big goals. With a transfer from PSV to Rangers completed this summer, Beasley was again making his mark in the Champions League until a fluke injury sadly ended his season.

Honorable mention - Joe Enochs (Osnabrück), Eddie Lewis (Derby County)

F Brian McBride - Fulham
Sure, he was injured scoring his first goal of this season back in August, but the Fulham captain still ended up as our top vote-getter at forward. Though some might see that fact as an indicator of low front line achievement overseas, we prefer to point to Bake claiming a nifty United hat trick (scoring against ManU, Newcastle and West Ham) during the second half of last season.

F Josh Wolff - 1860 Munich

Since moving from Kansas City in January, Wolff has notched two goals and six assists for the Lions. Though his output has been a bit erratic, the US international has become a key cog in the 1860 attack build.

Honorable mentions - Cameron Weaver (Haugesund), Charlie Davies (Hammarby)
