The Den Leader

by Greg Seltzer - October 28, 2007

While he may no longer be 1860 Munich captain, veteran defender Gregg Berhalter looks awfully busy leading the club back to the Bundesliga.

The former US international helped Energie Cottbus to the top flight two season back, then headed south to join the second flight Lions on a free transfer - a move seen by many as rather curious.

After a disappointing 2006/07 campaign that saw them finish in the middle of the pack, the "other" Allianz Arena crew now has the look of joining Bayern in the top flight next season, while Cottbus are winless in the Bundesliga cellar.

Full of experience from two World Cups, promotions, relegations and 13 years of European football, Berhalter is providing 1860 with cool command at the back for the third stingiest defense in the league.

He is pleased with the first chapter of the season, but in true leadership form, has warned his teammates not to count any chickens just yet.

"So far, the season has gone well," Berhalter recently reported to American Soccer Daily.

"There might have been a couple of games where we could have gotten better results. Having said that, if you would have asked me before the season starts would I take 18 points after nine game, I would have gladly accepted."

An ensuing loss and win has landed the club in third place with 21 points, three behind 2.Bundesliga leaders Borussia Mönchengladbach. With the Lions holding down a promotion place, the senior field player is keeping his often steely gaze ahead.

"There is confidence, but at the same time we are cautious because the season is very long and it is still somewhat early," he cautioned. "However, it is important to use this positive momentum to get as many points as we can now."

While some suggest Die Löwen couldn't have started the term any better, Berhalter is quick to point out that returning strike ace Markus Schroth has been on the shelf with an injury.

"Our biggest signing last year and one of our most proven goal scorers has yet to step on the field for us," he reminded. "He is expected back after the winter break and that could end up being a huge boost for us."

On a side with a good blend of youth and experience, the 34-year old center back may well be enjoying the finest season of his career. Esteemed German soccer magazine Kicker has him rated as the second-best defender in the league to date, and two of his three goals have been second half equalizers.

"As far as my performances, I am just taking it game by game and enjoying myself along the way," said Berhalter. "We have a extremely focused group and it is exciting being a part of something like that."

With his contract set to expire next summer, the backliner has hinted that the new year could well bring a new deal with the blue side of Bavaria.

"Within the next couple of months I will start to consider my options," stated Berhalter.

"The club has signaled that they will be talking to me about extending my contract, so that will definitely be something to consider. I would expect things to become more concrete in January."

For now, however, the New Jersey native must get ready for a tense November that will include back-to-back clashes with leaders ‘Gladbach and second place Freiburg.
